Nicosia, Cyprus. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris is reportedly dissatisfied with the police leadership’s decision to change the working hours of crime prevention unit (OPE) officers without prior consultation, sources at the interior ministry said.
Minister not briefed in advance
According to the sources, Fitiris was not informed in advance about plans to extend the new working schedule to the OPE and believes the matter has both operational and political implications.
Call for ministerial assessment of key units
The sources said Fitiris considers changes to key police units, including OPE, Ykan, and Mmad, should be assessed at the ministerial level due to their impact on crime prevention, policing and public safety.
Discussions expected as measures proceed
No meeting has yet taken place between the minister and the police leadership, but discussions are expected soon, the sources said. They added that the measures announced by the chief of police are expected to proceed as planned.
