Kastela, Croatia. Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides won the European Sailing Championship on Friday, claiming the title for the third time in his career. The event was held in Kastela, 7km from Split airport, where Kontides trains.
Third European title
Kontides said after the event that he has managed to reach the top every four years, with previous European titles in 2018 in La Rochelle and in 2022 in Hyeres. The two-time Olympic silver medallist said he was very happy to win the gold medal, particularly as he had been struggling to recover from an injury.
Final races and standings
Two final races were held on Friday, with Kontides finishing fifth in the first and 14th in the second, with the latter result not counting towards his points. With a total of 39 points, he remained in first place, one point ahead of Germany’s Philipp Buhl, who finished with 40 points.
