Havana, Cuba. The Kremlin said the situation around Cuba was heating up and urged restraint after a deadly incident involving a Florida-registered speedboat off the Caribbean island.

Incident off Cuba

Cuban forces killed four exiles and wounded six others after they entered Cuban waters aboard a speedboat on Wednesday and opened fire on a Cuban patrol, according to the account cited in the report. Russia condemned the incident as an “aggressive provocation by the United States” amid heightened tensions with Washington.

Kremlin calls for focus on humanitarian needs

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the most important priority was addressing Cuba’s socio-economic and humanitarian needs. “The situation around Cuba, as we can see, is heating up. The main thing is the humanitarian component. All humanitarian issues concerning Cuban citizens must be resolved, and no one should create obstacles,” Peskov said.

Appeal for restraint

Peskov added that security around the island was important and called on all sides to remain restrained and refrain from provocative actions.
