Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca district government (EOA) said it is assessing 90 buildings believed to be Turkish Cypriot properties to determine whether they meet the legal criteria for designation as dangerous buildings.

The inspections were conducted under the buildings regulation law as part of a broader programme to identify and manage structures that may pose safety risks.

Assessment process

The EOA said the 90 buildings have been identified as properties believed to fall within the category of Turkish Cypriot properties. Each is being examined to establish whether it should be officially declared dangerous.

The organisation said it sent an official letter to the Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service seeking confirmation that the buildings are managed by the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties.

Request for action

The letter included detailed information on each property and called on the competent authority to take the necessary action where appropriate.

Citing the seriousness of the issue and possible implications for the safety of citizens and neighbouring properties, the EOA called on the service to take all appropriate measures within its responsibilities.

It also requested information on measures already taken or planned to ensure coordination between the authorities responsible for managing the properties and addressing safety risks.

Public safety

The EOA said timely communication among the bodies involved was needed to support the prompt adoption of measures to protect public safety.

It said the inspections form part of efforts to identify buildings that may present structural risks to residents, neighbouring properties or the public, adding that it remains committed to fulfilling its statutory responsibilities to prevent potential hazards.
