Larnaca identifies 1,084 potentially dangerous buildings with safety works estimated at €5.94 million

Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca district government said on Friday that 1,084 buildings have been identified as potentially dangerous, with the cost of required safety works estimated at €5.94 million. It said the figure reflects the scale of the issue following updated records, on-site documentation and the assessment of new reports.


Inspections and classifications

The district government said private civil engineers have so far carried out 310 visual inspections, and the results are under evaluation.

It said 204 buildings have been classified as dangerous, while 116 have been placed in the highest risk category because they present a visible risk of collapse.

Interventions carried out

According to the district government, 31 interventions have already been completed to reduce risks.

These measures include fencing off dangerous buildings either by the district government or by property owners. It added that three buildings were demolished by their owners following intervention by the district government.

Ongoing procedures

The district government said eight more buildings have officially been declared dangerous, while procedures are under way to declare another 10.

In one case, a temporary evacuation order was issued after owners failed to comply with instructions from the competent authority.

Estimated cost and call for cooperation

It said technical assessments completed on 209 buildings put the cost of the required safety works at around €5.94 million.

The district government called on property owners to cooperate immediately with the authorities and take the necessary measures to reduce risks posed by unsafe buildings. It said it would continue implementing its management plan, strengthen controls and work with all stakeholders to address the issue.
