Larnaca local authority reports savings of more than €530,000 from renewable energy investments

Larnaca, Cyprus. The Larnaca district local government organisation said it has saved more than €530,000 through renewable energy investments since July 2024. It said renewable sources covered 19.2 per cent of its energy needs during the reporting period, lowering electricity costs and supporting sustainability goals.

Renewable energy strategy

In a statement released on Wednesday, the authority said the results reflect its strategy to promote sustainable development and improve energy efficiency. It said investments in photovoltaic systems have delivered significant energy and economic efficiency.

Photovoltaic installations

The authority said energy policy is central to its operations, with the aim of lowering costs and improving sustainability across public infrastructure. It operates photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 855 kilowatts at several sites, including pumping stations and the Larnaca wastewater treatment plant, which it identified as its largest electricity user.

Reported savings

According to the authority, the investment programme generated 955,554 kilowatt-hours in 2025, resulting in savings of €282,357. In the first four months of 2026, production reached 335,572 kilowatt-hours, delivering savings of more than €100,000.

Planned upgrade

The authority said that from the launch of the programme in July 2024 through April 2026, total savings from renewable energy exceeded €530,000. It added that the Larnaca wastewater treatment plant, which has a 700-kilowatt photovoltaic system, has been a key focus, and that VPA Cypenergia Ltd has been contracted to upgrade the system to 1.4 megawatt-peak, doubling its solar output potential.
