Nicosia, Cyprus. Legal proceedings are under way in Cyprus and abroad to identify individuals operating anonymous accounts on X, formerly Twitter, accused of repeatedly targeting a prominent Cypriot businessman with false, defamatory and damaging allegations.

The businessman’s legal team is seeking the preservation and lawful disclosure of information that could identify those who created, operated or coordinated the accounts.

Legal process

X allows users to remain anonymous, and the businessman’s legal team said anonymity was used in this case to conduct malicious attacks against his reputation.

The proceedings focus on obtaining information through legal channels and ensuring that any material is verified through appropriate legal and forensic procedures.

Information not disclosed

At this stage, the businessman and his legal team have not disclosed the names of the accounts, suspected individuals, evidence or technical details.

Any information obtained will first be examined and verified before further details are made public.

Accountability and platform liability

According to the businessman’s legal team, anonymity should not provide permanent protection from legal accountability when anonymous accounts are used to spread false allegations and cause serious reputational harm.

The legal team said anonymity may be lifted through appropriate legal procedures to identify and hold responsible those involved.

Questions concerning the potential liability of online platforms under the current European regulatory framework are also under legal consideration.

Cyprus Mail said it would follow the proceedings and report on the outcome once relevant court orders are examined.
