Nicosia, Cyprus. Lidl Cyprus has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, outlining sustainability measures across its value chain and linking its activities to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The company said the report aims to enhance accountability, transparency and engagement with stakeholders.
Report scope and CSR priorities
The company said sustainability is integrated into its operating model rather than treated as a separate initiative. The report sets out value created for the market, employees, suppliers, society and the natural environment, and highlights key fields of action within and beyond the value chain, including facilities, the supply chain, society, and consumer health and wellbeing.
Environment and emissions measures
Lidl Cyprus said protecting the environment is central to its strategy, including reducing emissions from operations in all countries where it operates and increasing efforts across the supply chain. The company said it invests in energy-efficient premises, photovoltaic systems and sustainable operation certification. In 2024, electricity produced from photovoltaics in Cyprus totalled 2,502,328 kWh, according to the report.
Circular practices and waste management
The company said it is investing in a cyclical approach focused on raw material management, packaging redesign, and promoting re-use and recycling. It also said it is working to optimise the management of food and organic waste, prioritising waste reduction and efficiency at each stage of the chain.
Biodiversity and responsible sourcing
Lidl Cyprus said biodiversity is incorporated into its supply chain through responsible supply practices, sustainable raw materials and improved water management. In 2024 in Cyprus, the company reported 183 biological brand products, 283 Fairtrade products and 591 Rainforest Alliance products.
Workplace and community initiatives
The company said its approach includes investing in a healthy work environment, equal opportunity, fair relations with partners and suppliers, and support for the local community. In 2024, Lidl Cyprus reported a total contribution to employment in Cyprus of 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, representing 0.4% of total jobs in the country, and said it partnered with 95 local food vendors.
The company also cited initiatives supporting youth, families and local communities, including creating a Breastfeeding Room at its main premises, continuing a strategic partnership with ‘Hope for Children’ through the Beat Bullying and Team Up programmes and the 1466 helpline, and promoting corporate volunteerism through the YOU initiative, which provides special paid leave for volunteering.
