Limassol, Cyprus. A Limassol court on Thursday adjourned proceedings in a private criminal prosecution concerning the death of national guardsman Thanasis Nicolaou, found dead near the Alassa bridge in September 2005. The next hearing was scheduled for May 14.
Private prosecution and defendants
Nicolaou’s family filed the private criminal prosecution against five defendants after earlier decisions by the state not to pursue indictments. The defendants include a former state pathologist and senior police officials, facing a total of 38 counts connected to alleged misconduct.
Charges linked to handling of the death
The defendants face charges including conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, neglect of official duty, and interference with judicial proceedings in relation to the handling of the death.
Amended charge sheet and defence request
In court on Thursday, the prosecution presented an amended charge sheet after defence attorneys objected that some indictments were vague and non-specific. The defence requested time to review the revised document.
Judge sets conditions for next hearing
The judge granted the request but said that by May 14, when the court reconvenes, the defence must definitively state whether they accept the charge sheet. If they do, the judge said they must also be ready to make their opening arguments.
Concern over delays
The judge expressed frustration at the delays, noting that the trial proceedings had begun in December.
What do you think the May 14 hearing will clarify about whether the defence will accept the amended charge sheet?
