Limassol, Cyprus. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades will meet mayors from urban Limassol areas on Friday to present and discuss a proposed €493 million programme of road upgrades intended to ease congestion.
The plan includes projects for immediate and longer-term implementation, targeted improvements, new road schemes and smart traffic management systems.
Road and traffic management projects
The proposed measures include Urban Traffic Control systems to coordinate traffic lights, optimise traffic flow and prioritise public transport.
According to philenews, the projects could be implemented with a €493 million budget, with the largest share allocated to new motorways and circular roads.
Major schemes
Projects listed in the plan include the Limassol-Saittas motorway, budgeted at €80 million; the second Yermasogia-Ayios Athanasios road, budgeted at €24 million; and the Ypsonas-Polemidia north circular road, budgeted at €60 million.
Other projects ready for implementation or the announcement of tenders include a roundabout at the Ayios Athanasios and Anikodomiseos junction and a new motorway exit at Pyrgos, Limassol.
Local authority proposals
The projects are reported to form the first phase of a wider investment plan aimed at addressing Limassol’s traffic problem.
Vafeades will ask local authorities to submit proposals to complement the government’s plan.
