Macron meets Cypriot President Christodoulides in Nicosia ahead of informal European Council summit

Nicosia, Cyprus. French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the presidential palace on Thursday afternoon to hold talks with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. His arrival was delayed, with some surmising the delay may have been caused by farmers demonstrating at the Rizoelia roundabout.

Arrival and delegation

Macron travelled to the capital accompanied by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and European Affairs Deputy Minister Marilena Raouna were at the palace to welcome the French delegation.

Talks at the presidential palace

Upon Macron’s arrival, Christodoulides shared a joke about the existence of the British coat of arms on the front of the palace. The two leaders and their delegations then entered the palace for talks, and were expected to make statements later in the afternoon.

Next stop: Ayia Napa

After the talks, Macron and Christodoulides were expected to head to Ayia Napa for the first part of this week’s informal European Council summit.
