Golden Gate Bridge opens in 1937

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, with 200,000 people crossing it on its first day. Construction of the bridge had taken four years, four months and 22 days.

Kenyatta elected in 1963

In 1963, Jomo Kenyatta was elected the first prime minister of a self-governing Kenya. He became state president on independence from Britain the following year.

Nehru dies in 1964

Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister after independence, died in 1964 at the age of 74.
