Man arrested in Nicosia after alleged attack on police officer and car arson

Nicosia, Cyprus. A 35-year-old man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after allegedly attacking a police officer and setting a car on fire outside a house in Nicosia. Police said the suspect was remanded in custody as investigations continue.


Incident and arrest

Police said officers were called to a residence at around 2pm following reports that a man outside the property was causing concern. When a police officer attempted to arrest him, the suspect allegedly struck the officer in the face.

Additional officers arrived at the scene, and the 35-year-old was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

Vehicle fire

At the same time, authorities discovered a fire inside the vehicle belonging to the 34-year-old female owner of the house. The fire brigade extinguished the blaze.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted that he had intentionally set the car on fire.

Officer treated

The police officer who was assaulted was taken to Nicosia general hospital, where he received first aid before being discharged.
