Medochemie marks 50 years since its founding in Limassol

Medochemie

Limassol, Cyprus. Medochemie marked its 50th anniversary in 2026, reflecting on its development from a Limassol-based start-up into a global pharmaceutical exporter. The company described the milestone as the result of a journey shaped by vision, innovation and sustained international expansion.

Origins in post-1974 Cyprus

The company was established in 1976, at a time when Cyprus was still recovering from the events of 1974 and rebuilding its economic and social foundations.

Medochemie began when Dr Andreas Pittas, then a young physician, chose not to follow a conventional medical career and instead sought to build an internationally competitive pharmaceutical company in Cyprus.

Early inspiration and direction

The origins of the idea date back to Pittas’ medical studies in Austria, where he developed a strong interest in pharmacology and the broader potential of pharmaceutical science.

During that period, he concluded that serving humanity could extend beyond clinical practice to include the development of high-quality medicines capable of improving lives globally.

Challenges at the outset

After returning to Cyprus, Pittas faced limited infrastructure, scarce industrial opportunities and widespread scepticism about the viability of a Cypriot pharmaceutical exporter.

Despite those conditions, he maintained that Cyprus could build a credible pharmaceutical industry with a strong international presence.

Focus on quality

The early years of development were demanding, requiring the securing of resources, technical expertise, manufacturing capacity and international trust.

From the outset, the company said one principle was non-negotiable: quality was placed at the core of its identity and operations.
