Nearly €200,000 seized from Ukrainian passenger at Paphos airport after cash found in socks

Paphos, Cyprus. Customs officers seized nearly €200,000 in undeclared cash from a Ukrainian passenger at Paphos airport after the money was found hidden in socks in his luggage.

Cash discovered during inspection

The customs department said on Tuesday that the passenger arrived in Cyprus from Dublin on Sunday, when officers carried out an inspection following a tip-off.

An x-ray examination of the luggage led to a physical search, during which officers found €199,950 in cash “carefully hidden inside 13 socks, placed inside shoes”.

The department said the passenger failed to declare the money on arrival in Cyprus, and officers seized the full amount.

Investigation continues

The case is now being investigated further by customs’ investigative branch.
