New 2026 projects announced for Nea Paphos, including mosaic conservation and Tombs of the Kings upgrades

Paphos, Cyprus. New projects planned for 2026 at the archaeological site of Nea Paphos were announced during a visit by Deputy Culture Minister Vasiliki Kassianidou, with a focus on mosaic conservation and upgrades to the Tombs of the Kings.


Completed works and site visit

Kassianidou expressed satisfaction with recently completed conservation and improvement works at Nea Paphos. She also toured the early Christian Basilica of Chrysopolitissa in Kato Paphos to mark the completion of maintenance works, including the urgent restoration of pedestrian bridges.

Significance of Nea Paphos

Dating from the 4th to 6th centuries AD, the Nea Paphos archaeological site is among Cyprus’ most significant monuments and is known for its mosaic floors and the Column of the Apostle Paul.

Cooperation and project implementation

Accompanied by Georgios Georgiou, director of the Department of Antiquities, Kassianidou praised the implementation of the projects and the cooperation between the relevant services.

Plans for the Tombs of the Kings

Kassianidou outlined plans to enhance visitor facilities at the Tombs of the Kings, described as Cyprus’ most visited archaeological site, and stressed the need for protective shelters.

Unesco status and technical upgrades

Georgiou highlighted the site’s Unesco World Heritage status and its connection to other important monuments in the area. He said the recent upgrades included major technical improvements, particularly elevated pedestrian bridges intended to improve visitors’ understanding of the site.

Transparent flooring and ongoing challenges

Georgiou referred to the installation of transparent flooring that allows visitors to view archaeological remains beneath. He acknowledged ongoing challenges related to the construction of shelters and said efforts are under way to identify solutions that respect the site’s integrity.

Project cost

The total cost of the project approached €1 million.
