New traffic lights to begin operating at two Aradippou junctions on Tuesday

Aradippou, Cyprus. Additional traffic lights will begin operating on Tuesday at two junctions in Aradippou, Mayor Christodoulos Partou said on Sunday. The systems are part of works on Ellados Avenue, where several serious and fatal accidents have occurred in the past.

Installation timeline

Partou said the installation of the traffic lights on three parts of Ellados Avenue had lasted about four months. He said all three sets of traffic lights were delivered to the municipality at the end of May, but the necessary technical tests and adjustments then had to be completed.

Junctions affected

The intersection of Ellados Avenue with Ivykou and Sergiou & Vakchou Streets was put into operation on Wednesday. The remaining systems at the intersections of Ellados Avenue with Georgiou Theotoka Street and Iakovou Patatsou Street will begin operating on Tuesday.

Traffic disruption and safety warning

The completion of the installation means that parts of Ellados Avenue will be closed to traffic on Monday and Tuesday. Partou called on drivers to be especially careful, to drive at low speeds, to comply with temporary road signs and to be patient so the work can be completed and the lights and cameras can operate without problems.

Cost and additional works

Pedestrian crossings have also been installed at the three points, with a total cost to the municipality of €280,000. Partou said pavements will be built on both sides of the avenue this year and next year, and that trees have also been planted.

Accident history

Partou said the installation of the light-controlled intersections should have been carried out years ago, as many drivers, in addition to trucks, use Ellados Avenue. He said several accidents had occurred on the avenue in the past, including some that were fatal.

A crash on Ellados Avenue in March resulted in the death of a 52-year-old.
