Nicosia mayor defends Ledras and Onasagorou regeneration plans

Road works have been taking place in Nicosia's old city for several years now

Nicosia, Cyprus. Mayor Charalambos Prontzos said the planned regeneration of Ledras and Onasagorou streets is necessary because of ageing infrastructure, while acknowledging concerns from shopkeepers and residents about the impact of the works.

Infrastructure concerns

Speaking to Kathimerini on Wednesday, Prontzos said the municipality recognised the importance of the area for businesses, particularly those dependent on outdoor seating, but said immediate intervention was needed.

He said the project aimed to create a safer and upgraded environment for businesses and residents. According to the mayor, sewage networks are in a poor condition, electricity infrastructure is operating at its limits and stormwater systems have contributed to flooding in some areas.

Prontzos said experts had advised that upgrades to the infrastructure could not be delayed further, as existing systems had reached the end of their operational lifespan.

Business concerns and planned works

The proposed redesign has faced opposition from some shopkeepers and property owners in the historic centre, who have raised concerns about disruption and the potential effect of construction works on commercial activity.

Prontzos said the municipality had considered previous regeneration projects in the historic centre, citing Ermou Street as an example where improvements had benefited both the city’s appearance and economic activity.

The project also includes facade renovations. Prontzos said work had already begun and had not caused significant problems for businesses or residents, adding that issues arising during the process were being addressed.
