Limassol, Cyprus. Teachers’ trade union Oelmek on Monday condemned an incident in which it said a parent entered a high school and attempted to attack a teacher. The union also said similar incidents were recorded in other schools.

Union account of the incident

Oelmek said a parent entered the school premises, insulted staff, issued serious threats, and attempted a physical attack on a teacher.

Impact on schools

The union said such behaviour is unacceptable and harms the prestige of state schools, creates fear and insecurity, and undermines the educational mission.

Calls for action and protocols

Oelmek said the safety of teachers and all members of the school community is non-negotiable and called on the education ministry and the police to immediately take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents. It said measures should include clear and binding protocols for managing incidents of violence or threats by third parties against teachers.

School-family cooperation

The union said cooperation between schools and families requires mutual respect, dialogue, and adherence to the law, adding that violence or intimidation against teachers will not be tolerated.
