Larnaca, Cyprus. Okypy said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of 42-year-old Georgia Christofi at Larnaca general hospital are close to being completed, a day after she died.
Investigation timeline
Okypy spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou said an investigation is underway to fully document the events and is expected to be completed very soon. Christofi, a multiple sclerosis patient, died on Sunday from complications after undergoing a hysterectomy at the hospital on January 16.
Post-operative events
According to the account reported in her medical file, Christofi was initially in a stable post-operative condition, but the following day she suffered a serious brain haemorrhage and fell into a permanent coma after being found unconscious on the bathroom floor. She remained intubated in the hospital’s intensive care unit and died three weeks after the surgery.
Family complaint and differing accounts
Her family previously filed a complaint with Okypy accusing the hospital of negligence, after which an investigation was launched. Christofi reportedly contacted relatives the day after surgery to say her repeated requests for help to go to the toilet had gone unanswered.
Authorities reported that her medical file states she was found unclothed and wet, face down on the floor of a hospital toilet, and tests later revealed a cerebral haemorrhage. The family said this contradicts the hospital’s earlier account that she fell from her bed, and said they believe her attempt to go to the toilet unaided led to a fall and injury.
The family also said she stopped replying to messages earlier in the day, prompting concern among relatives who believe this was due to a second fall.
