Nicosia, Cyprus. An orange weather warning has been issued for Thursday as temperatures are forecast to reach 44 degrees Celsius inland. The warning will be in force from 12pm to 5pm, with temperatures expected to reach 33C in mountainous areas.
Overnight warning
A yellow weather warning for high temperatures will be in effect between 9pm and 6am. Overnight temperatures are forecast not to fall below 28C inland and 26C in mountainous areas.
Possible work restrictions
With the orange warning due to take effect on Thursday, the labour inspection department is likely to again order the suspension of outdoor work during the warning period.
The department ordinarily requires “all outdoor heavy- and medium-duty work”, as well as work involving the transport or delivery of products using two-wheeled vehicles, to stop in affected areas.
Affected areas are typically defined as locations more than 10 kilometres from the coast and below 300 metres above sea level, as well as all areas above 1,150 metres.
Work categories and guidance
Light outdoor work is not ordinarily prohibited during orange weather warnings. The department defines light work as office work, work with light tools, cleaning and routine driving.
Moderate work is also usually permitted during the hottest part of the day. This includes fencing, concreting, bricklaying, plastering, painting, flooring, tiling, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing and asphalt paving.
Workers in areas not covered by the orange warning and professions not affected by any order are usually advised to adjust their work and rest appropriately to avoid or reduce heat stress. The department typically recommends frequent short breaks in a shady, cool or properly air-conditioned area, or where fans can be used.
