Palmas to meet Dendias in Nicosia amid Middle East security concerns

Nicosia, Cyprus. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas is scheduled to meet Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias in Nicosia on Tuesday to discuss developments in the region amid the ongoing war between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Planned meetings and security review

Palmas said in a post on X on Monday evening that, in light of developments in the Middle East and the region, he will meet Dendias and the chief of the Hellenic National Defence staff, General Dimitrios Houpis. Palmas said the ministers, together with Houpis, will review available data to assess the current security situation and discuss measures aimed at responding to potential dangers and safeguarding the public.

Dendias to meet President Christodoulides

Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Dendias is also scheduled to meet President Nikos Christodoulides later in the day.

Recent contacts and aircraft arrival

Letymbiotis said Christodoulides and Dendias held a phone call on Monday, after which four Greek F-16 fighter jets arrived in Cyprus. The arrival followed drone strikes targeting the island’s British bases in Akrotiri amid the crisis in the Middle East.

Government remarks on cooperation

Letymbiotis previously expressed gratitude to the Greek administration for close collaboration and communication under strained circumstances.
