Paphos, Cyprus. Paphos Municipality will mark World Music Day on Sunday with a musical route through the city centre featuring choir, harp, French chanson, storytelling and jazz performances. The programme will take place at several locations from 4pm to 7.30pm.
Programme opens at Municipal Garden
The programme will begin at 4pm at the Municipal Garden, behind the Municipality, with performances by the Vox Venus Equal Voices Choir and the Harp Ensemble of the Pafos Music School.
The Vox Venus Choir, the Girls’ Choir of the Music Schools of Paphos and Limassol, will present arrangements of Cypriot traditional songs, including Aspri mou Triantafyllitsa – Aspron Triantafyllo, Ayia Kotsini and Myrtia. The choir will be accompanied on piano by Ivelina Rouseva, piano teacher at the Paphos Music School, and conducted by Eleni Kyprianou.
The Harp Ensemble of the Pafos Music School will perform works including The Waltz of Lost Dreams by Manos Hadjidakis, the traditional song To Yasemin, Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Passacaglia in G Minor by GF Handel, and the traditional English song Greensleeves.
French song performance at Sleeping Eros Fountain
The musical route will continue at 5.30pm at the Sleeping Eros Fountain in Kostis Palamas Square. In collaboration with the Alliance Française de Paphos, Ermina Kalogirou on vocals and Ilias Koutlis on guitar will present From Paris with Love.
The performance is described as a musical journey through French song and will include works such as La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf, Sous le Ciel de Paris and Je Veux by Zaz, alongside other French chansons.
Family performance at Ivi’s Maliotou Park
At 6.30pm, the programme will move to Ivi’s Maliotou Park, in front of the Municipal Art Gallery, for The Cicada’s Apology, a music and storytelling performance for families featuring Alexis Goudas as narrator and the Quintus Ensemble.
Children and adults are invited to bring blankets and watch the performance seated on the grass under the park’s trees.
Jazz finale at Dioikitiria Square
The route will conclude at 7.30pm at Dioikitiria Square with the Chara Miller Jazz Quintet, which will present a programme of international and Greek songs through jazz arrangements.
The ensemble includes Chara Miller on vocals, Emilios Patsalides on guitar, Kostas Challoumas on double bass, Giorgos Kylilis on drums and Mustafa Esenyel on keyboards. It will perform Greek and English jazz and swing standards as well as arrangements from various musical genres.
