Paralimni, Cyprus. The municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia has voiced opposition to the operation of migrant accommodation structures in tourist areas, citing concerns about their location and management. The municipality said it worked with authorities to relocate an individual from a third country who had been transferred to a facility in the local tourist zone.
Municipality statement on relocation
In a statement issued on Friday, the municipality said it had been informed of a case involving “an individual from a third country, with a serious history of delinquent behaviour” who had been transferred to a facility within the local tourist area.
According to the statement, the individual had previously been deemed undesirable elsewhere.
The municipality said that from the time it was informed, it coordinated with the deputy migration ministry and the police, resulting in the person’s relocation. It said the action was taken “to avoid any potential incident”.
Thanks to authorities
The municipality expressed thanks to the deputy migration ministry and to the Famagusta police department for what it described as their immediate response and cooperation in managing the matter.
Call to halt agreements for tourism zones
The statement reiterated the municipality’s broader position that “the operation of migrant structures within tourist areas throughout Cyprus is wrong and harmful”.
It called on relevant authorities to halt agreements that allow the establishment of accommodation facilities in tourism zones.
Concerns over management of delinquent behaviour cases
The municipality also requested “the immediate and responsible management of cases of individuals from third countries who exhibit delinquent behaviour or have a serious criminal record”, pointing to concerns about how such cases are handled within existing structures.
Local authorities have previously raised similar concerns about migrant facilities in areas with significant tourism activity.
