Pasika urges restraint in public statements amid regional tensions, says Cyprus remains safe

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus hospitality venues association (Pasika) on Thursday called for greater responsibility in public statements, particularly on social media, warning against posts that could fuel unjustified panic and harm the economy and hospitality sector.

Call for responsibility in public debate

Pasika said “responsibility and composure are more necessary today than ever,” arguing that exaggerated public debate and the ease of online expression risk creating a distorted picture of the situation. The association said “irresponsibility, immaturity and a misreading of events were fostering a negative climate that does not reflect reality,” adding that “Cyprus remains a safe country despite regional tensions”.

Message to citizens, institutions and media

“We must all, without exception, citizens, institutions and the media, understand the seriousness of our responsibility and operate responsibly, clearly highlighting the obvious: that Cyprus remains a safe country,” Pasika said.

Cyprus’ role during previous instability

The association said that in previous periods of instability in the region, Cyprus had not only remained safe but had often served as a refuge for residents of neighbouring countries.

Interpretation of European forces presence

Pasika said the presence of forces from European states in Cyprus should be interpreted correctly as part of international cooperation and preventive security measures, rather than as a sign of danger. “This reflects the island’s stability and geostrategic importance,” it said.

Potential economic pressures on hospitality

Pasika acknowledged that the hospitality sector could come under pressure from possible increases in fuel, energy and basic goods costs. It added that “these challenges could be limited if everyone acts responsibly”.

How do you assess the impact of public statements on perceptions of safety and the hospitality sector in Cyprus?
