Pasykaf welcomes cabinet approval of Cyprus national cancer institute law for 2026

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Pancyprian association of cancer patients and friends (Pasykaf) welcomed cabinet approval of the national cancer institute law of 2026, calling it a major step forward for cancer care in Cyprus.

Institute to operate as an autonomous scientific body

In a statement, Pasykaf said establishing the national cancer institute as an autonomous scientific body would enable better organisation, supervision and use of oncology services across the country.

Long-standing priority and earlier proposals

“The creation of a national cancer institute has been a key priority for Pasykaf for years,” the association said. It added that it submitted an official proposal to the health ministry and the national cancer committee in 2016, and said the need was also reflected in the national cancer strategy of 2019.

Executive director highlights significance

Pasykaf executive director Nikolas Filippou described the bill’s approval as a “particularly important development” for Cyprus and for people affected by cancer. He said institutionalising the body could improve coordination of services, strengthen the national cancer strategy, and support more comprehensive and high-quality patient care.

Call for swift implementation and continued support

The association called for swift implementation of the institute, stressing that proper organisation and coordination of services are crucial to improving care and quality of life for people with cancer. Pasykaf also reaffirmed its commitment to contribute its experience and knowledge to help the institute develop into a strong, modern and reliable pillar for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, research and care of cancer in Cyprus.
