Nicosia, Cyprus. The first phase of the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere Restoration Project has been completed, marking progress toward a greener, more accessible and environmentally sustainable public space in the capital, UNDP Cyprus said on Friday.
The project is funded by the EU through the Assistance Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community and is being implemented by UNDP.
Phase one completed
UNDP Cyprus described the completion of phase one as a major milestone in the broader restoration effort in the divided capital.
The first phase includes a 1.2-kilometre stretch linking the Ledra Palace crossing with the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere corridor.
Infrastructure and objectives
The new infrastructure includes a two-way cycle lane, a pedestrian walkway and a green belt aimed at improving safety, accessibility and access to nature in the city.
According to UNDP Cyprus, the project is intended to restore natural habitats, improve public spaces and encourage community interaction.
It also aims to promote sustainable living, environmental awareness and stronger community ties through improved walking and cycling infrastructure.
Public event and next phase
EU and UNDP officials, along with cycling groups, community organisations and residents from Nicosia, marked the completion with walking and cycling activities along the new route.
The corridor is intended to attract 250,000 annual visitors by expanding green spaces, restoring the river and offering accessible recreation areas.
Phase two is scheduled to begin in September and will seek to expand the walking and cycling network for sustainable mobility, recreation, environmental protection and community interaction in Nicosia.
