Paphos, Cyprus. A police constable has been detained over an alleged assault on a mobile speed camera driver on the Paphos to Limassol highway, with a court granting a two-day remand to support investigations.

Arrests and custody

Police said the 44-year-old constable was arrested under a court warrant on Tuesday on the instructions of police chief Themistos Arnaoutis. A second suspect, aged 37, also remains in custody in relation to the case.

Details of the incident

Authorities said the incident occurred at about 2.40am on March 12, when a 36-year-old driver employed by a traffic light company was conducting a speed check from a mobile camera vehicle parked near the Kouklia exit.

Investigators said three individuals arrived at the scene and approached the vehicle. Police said one person asked to speak to the driver and, when the window was opened, an unknown man allegedly sprayed him in the face while the other two struck the company vehicle, causing damage.

The driver left the scene and reported the incident at a local police station, filing a formal complaint shortly afterwards.

Suspensions and ongoing inquiry

Authorities confirmed that both officers linked to the case have been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry. Police said the investigation is continuing as officers examine evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
