Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus police on Monday delivered to Justice Minister Costas Fitiris a report into accusations made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis involving allegations of abuse of a woman identified only as ‘Sandy’. Fitiris declined to comment on the report’s contents, saying any public statement would follow after President Nikos Christodoulides is informed.

Police update and pending assessments

Earlier, police spokesman Vyron Vyronos confirmed the report had been compiled but said he did not have an exact timeframe for when other results would be received. He described the case as complex and involving public opinion, adding that it is being investigated with seriousness and that difficulties were encountered, while stating the investigative team carried out its work.

Vyronos said that to complete the examinations, a report from the European Union agency for law enforcement, Europol, must also be received. The government has also enlisted the United States’ federal bureau of investigations, the FBI, to assist in its inquiries.

Allegations and responses

Drousiotis has claimed that ‘Sandy’, now 45, was raped and stabbed by former supreme court judge Michalakis Christodoulou, whom he also accuses of fathering three of her children. Christodoulou has denied the allegations, saying he had “acted like a father” to ‘Sandy’.

Other figures named by Drousiotis, including former Edek MEP Demetris Papadakis and Edek deputy leader Morfakis Solomonides, whom Drousiotis alleges acted at Christodoulou’s behest as informants and interlocutors, have also denied the allegations.

Phileleftheros account

Newspaper Phileleftheros has said Drousiotis’ accusations do not correspond with reality. It wrote last Friday that ‘Sandy’ has one child whose father is not Christodoulou, and that Gesy and social insurance records show she worked continuously in Cyprus between 2001 and 2023, which it said rules out the possibility that she spent an extended period in Germany as Drousiotis has claimed.

What further findings, if any, will authorities cite once the Europol report is received?
