Nicosia, Cyprus. A strong police presence across the island on Saturday night led to 10 arrests as authorities continued efforts to combat organized crime and other serious offences. The arrests were linked to illegal possession of narcotics, illegal stay on the island, begging and other crimes.
Overnight checks and arrests
Police said 728 drivers and 305 passengers were checked during the operations. Authorities also inspected 64 office premises and made nine charges.
Traffic and road safety enforcement
Among drivers, 227 charges were made, with 13 cases set to be investigated. Police recorded 105 speeding charges and confiscated 15 cars.
Alcohol and drug driving tests
Alcotests were carried out on 314 people, resulting in 19 charges. Two people were found guilty of drug driving.
Operations to continue
Police said the operations would continue in an effort to increase the feeling of public safety.
