Nicosia, Cyprus. Police investigations into defective Takata airbags are at an advanced stage, with statements still being taken, police press officer Michalis Michail said on Monday.
Michail said the time needed to complete the investigations would depend on the amount of work remaining.
Ongoing investigation
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Michail said he did not know how many further statements would be required or whether the Law Office had issued any new instructions.
“The information we received was that the investigation of the case is ongoing,” he said.
Fatal cases under investigation
Kyriakos Oxinos, 24, was killed when a defective Takata airbag exploded during a traffic accident in January 2023.
Police are also investigating a second fatality linked to defective Takata airbags. Styliani Giorgalli, 19, from Avgorou, died in an accident in October 2024.
An autopsy found that Giorgalli died from haemorrhagic shock caused by a ruptured ascending aorta and lung. The injuries were allegedly caused by metal shrapnel from a defective airbag.
Earlier injury
The first recorded injury linked to a Takata airbag occurred in 2017, when Alexandros Lougos sustained serious facial injuries while driving.
Lougos has undergone 21 operations to restore his face.
