Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. Expanded on-call services and the appointment of a permanent cardiologist for Polis Chrysochous hospital were discussed at a meeting on Friday between Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi and Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides.
Staffing and emergency cover
The Health Ministry said it intends to recruit a second cardiologist for Paphos hospital, allowing its current cardiologist to focus exclusively on the needs of Polis Chrysochous hospital.
Until then, the Polis Chrysochous facility will retain on-call hours to meet current needs.
The ministry also said it would seek to operate two ambulance crews on a 24-hour basis and plans to hire two additional nurses.
Laboratory and radiology services
Laboratory operating hours at the hospital are to be extended and new equipment will be provided.
An additional radiologist for the radiology department is expected to be recruited by the end of the year, the minister said.
New hospital project
The meeting also reviewed progress on plans to build a new Polis Chrysochous hospital.
According to the ministry, the tender for construction works is expected to be launched in October 2026, with the contract expected to be awarded by March 2027.
Once completed, the new hospital is expected to employ 120 staff, compared with 65 employees at the existing facility.
