Nicosia, Cyprus. A 27-week premature baby was born during an emergency call reporting that a woman was haemorrhaging heavily, according to the ambulance service. The infant was resuscitated following instructions given over the phone until an ambulance arrived.

Emergency call and phone instructions

Head of the ambulance service Riana Constantinou told Alpha TV that the call was made at 2am on Thursday. She said the officer who answered provided instructions to the man who called on how to resuscitate the infant.

Constantinou said the baby was “very premature, just 27 weeks.” She added that the caller remained calm and followed the instructions meticulously.

Ambulance response and hospital transfer

Constantinou said the baby remained alive until the ambulance arrived. The crew found the woman haemorrhaging heavily and the baby still in cardiac arrest, and continued the resuscitation process.

She said another ambulance arrived and an incubator was used to transport the baby and its mother to hospital. The infant was placed in neonatal intensive care.

Condition of mother and infant

Constantinou said the woman was in good health. She added that the baby was intubated and stable, though very small and light in weight.
