Residents remain in dangerous Yermasoyia building after April 20 evacuation deadline

The collapsed building in Yermasoyia where two people died

Limassol, Cyprus. Occupants of the Seagate block in Yermasoyia are still living in the building despite an April 20 deadline to leave, as the Limassol EOA prepares to seek a court order to enforce evacuation.

Evacuation process and legal steps

The Limassol EOA sent a letter on April 17 informing tenants they had to abandon the building by midnight on April 20. When the occupants did not leave, the case was assigned to a law firm that is studying reports and surveys.

Once that review is complete, possibly within a week, the lawyers are expected to seek a court order on behalf of the Limassol EOA to evacuate the building immediately. Limassol EOA president Yiannis Tsouloftas said evacuations of buildings deemed dangerous can only be carried out after obtaining a relevant court order.

Ongoing occupancy and businesses

According to Politis, in addition to residents, a number of businesses are operating ground-floor shops and offices in the building.

Collapse in Yermasoyia and wider safety concerns

On April 11, another dangerous building in Yermasoyia partly collapsed, leaving two people dead. The report said residents of the Seagate block may be allowed to continue occupying their flats until a court order is issued forcing them to leave.

The building that collapsed had been flagged years earlier, with warnings issued in 2017 advising owners to carry out repairs. In March 2026, it had been classified as dangerous.

The Seagate complex is one of 780 buildings in Limassol deemed dangerous by the Limassol EOA, with 80 reportedly on the verge of collapse. Similar concerns have been recorded in other districts, with 268 buildings deemed unsafe in Nicosia, including four requiring immediate evacuation, and 226 buildings identified as dangerous in Paphos.
