Moscow, Russia. Russia said it would provide active support to Cuba despite what it described as US attempts to intimidate the island and tighten sanctions.

US charges against Raúl Castro

The United States announced murder charges against former President Raúl Castro on Wednesday, escalating Washington’s campaign against Cuba, where communists have been in charge since Fidel Castro led a revolution in 1959.

Russia’s pledge of support

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that Russia would continue to provide “the most active support” to the Cuban people during what she called an extremely difficult period. She did not provide details on what support Russia would offer.

Condemnation of US actions

Zakharova said Russia reaffirmed full solidarity with Cuba and condemned what she described as gross interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, intimidation, and the use of illegal unilateral restrictive measures, threats, and blackmail. She also said the United States was showing intolerance toward dissent and cited what she called a revived Monroe Doctrine.
