Akrotiri, Cyprus. Schools in the villages of Trachoni, Episkopi, Akrotiri and Asomatos, within the British Akrotiri base area, were closed on Monday as a precaution after a drone struck the air force base at Akrotiri shortly after midnight.

School closures and arrangements

The Cyprus News Agency quoted an education ministry source confirming the closures. The source said that if children arrive at the schools, arrangements will be made to ensure they either return home safely or remain under the supervision of teachers on school grounds.

Base notification and response

Personnel on the British bases were informed shortly after 1am that a small drone had impacted the airfield and that base authorities were responding.

Damage and warnings

Authorities said there were no casualties and that minor damage was caused. Personnel were instructed to remain in place and await further instruction, with a warning that there may be additional impact. Explosion and siren sounds were heard in nearby Limassol.
