Washington, United States. Secret Service agents swarmed a Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday night to protect President Donald Trump from an armed intruder, according to journalists and officials. The incident triggered panic and led to the immediate cancellation of an annual dinner.

Witness account from inside the ballroom

Phileleftheros contributor and SKAI correspondent Michalis Ignatiou, who was inside the hall, said the situation escalated quickly. He said gunshots were heard but guests initially did not recognise the sound until Secret Service agents entered the room shouting, “Everyone under the tables!”

Ignatiou said agents moved to secure the President, First Lady Melania Trump, and the Secretary of State as panic spread in a room he described as filled with the entire cabinet and Washington’s media elite. He said the faces of those taking cover “turned white” as the seriousness of the threat became apparent.

Suspect detained and questions over access

The suspect was identified as a 31-year-old teacher from California and was reported to have been apprehended while descending the stairs toward the ballroom. Questions remained over how the suspect entered the building despite a heavy police presence outside linked to simultaneous pro-Iran and pro-Palestine protests.

Ignatiou suggested the suspect may have booked a room at the hotel to bypass external security, and said protesters were vocal but polite to guests entering the venue.

Trump comments and security footage

At a White House press conference about two hours after the incident, President Trump, still wearing his tuxedo, described the attacker as a “potential assassin” and a “deranged lone wolf.” He said a law enforcement officer was shot during the encounter.

Trump later posted security footage on Truth Social that appeared to show a man rushing through a metal detector at the ballroom entrance before being intercepted by agents. He praised the “brave members of the Secret Service” for their response and criticised the Hilton hotel as “not a particularly secure building.”

Event cancelled and historical context

The annual dinner, which Trump was attending for the first time as President, was cancelled following the breach. The Washington Hilton is the same site where President Ronald Reagan was wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt.
