Akrotiri, Cyprus. Sirens sounded on Thursday and residents in Akrotiri received SMS alerts warning of an ongoing security threat. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis later said the alert was over.
SMS alert to residents
The SMS message to residents said: “Only for Akrotiri residents: There is an ongoing security threat. Please remain indoors and at your positions until further notice.”
According to Reporter, the alert also advised people to stay away from windows and shelter behind or under strong, heavy furniture.
Government response
A few minutes later, Letymbiotis said the alert had ended.
“An incident means there is an object. What we are doing is evaluating every piece of information and indication, and activating the measures and protocols,” he said.
Letymbiotis added that “the measures were are taking are preventive and we do not undermine any piece of information”.
