Seven Paok FC fans killed in Romania van crash en route to Lyon

Bucharest, Romania. Seven fans of Greek football side Paok FC were killed in Romania on Tuesday after their van collided head-on with a lorry while traveling to Lyon, France, for a Europa League match. Three other passengers are being treated in critical condition.


Crash details

The fans were traveling in a van that collided head-on with a lorry. A dashcam video of the accident showed the van overtaking, swerving and hitting the lorry.

Greek government and embassy response

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his deep sorrow and said the government and the Greek embassy in Romania were cooperating with local authorities to provide any necessary assistance. The Greek foreign ministry said embassy personnel had immediately traveled to the scene of the accident.

Vans and buses transporting fans to European destinations choose to travel via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary to avoid long waits at non-EU borders.
