Limassol, Cyprus. The Spanish production of Euripides’ The Trojan Women, directed by Carlota Ferrer, will open the 29th edition of the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama next month. The production will be staged at Curium Ancient Theatre on July 3 and 4.

Festival opening production

Produced by Come y Calla Productions in collaboration with the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival, The Trojan Women will inaugurate this year’s festival programme. Acclaimed actress Isabel Ordaz stars as Hecuba, leading the ensemble cast.

Story and themes

The drama begins after the fall of Troy, when the women of the city await the fate imposed on them by the victors, including slavery, exile and violence. In a setting of ruin, the captive Trojan women and their queen, Hecuba, are presented as bearers of memory, with pain expressed as both loss and resistance against oblivion.

Production approach

The production premiered in 2025 at the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival, where it received critical and audience acclaim. It presents Euripides’ tragedy as a contemporary theatrical work in which text is combined with physicality, music, movement and visual compositions.

War and memory

Through symbolism, projections and soundscapes, the performance focuses on the violence of war and its consequences for the bodies and lives of the defeated, particularly women, who are depicted as the primary bearers of memory and trauma.

Event details

The performances will take place on July 3 and 4 at Ancient Curium Theatre in Limassol district at 9pm. Tickets are priced at €16. Further information is available by telephone at 7000-2414 and online at www.greekdramafest.com.
