Strong winds cut power to more than 20 communities across Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus. Strong winds left more than 20 communities in Cyprus without electricity on Wednesday morning as severe weather swept across the island. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus reported significant power supply issues across all districts.

Power supply disruptions and response

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus said the outages were mainly caused by wind damage. It also reported serious delays at its call centre due to a high volume of incoming calls as repair crews worked to restore electricity.

Areas affected across districts

Power cuts affected Farmakas, Geri, Kakopetria, and parts of Pera Chorio Nisou and Pera in Nicosia.

In Limassol, outages were reported in Erimi, Germasogeia, Kantou, Prodromos, and Souni.

In Larnaca, disruptions affected Odou, Ormideia, Perivolia, and Xylotymbou.

In Paphos, issues were reported in Giolou, Miliou, and Theletra, along with a planned outage in Latchi.

Acheritou, Dasaki Achna, and Vrysoulles in Famagusta also reported power outages.

Weather conditions

The disruption coincided with a low-pressure system over the Black Sea that brought strong winds, heavy rain, and isolated thunderstorms to Cyprus.

Gusts in exposed areas reached force 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale, while coastal winds were at force 6 to 7. Sea conditions were very rough, and snowfall fell in the higher mountains.
