Nicosia, Cyprus. STYX Film Encounters is presenting “Is It Magic?”, a series of five film screenings examining moments when reality becomes unsettled. The programme runs from March to May at Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia.
Programme focus
The series approaches magic as more than the supernatural, framing it as a shift in perception that can emerge through fear, desire, fantasy, myth, performance, or the force of an image. The programme brings together films in which enchantment appears in different forms, including occult menace, childhood wonder, romantic projection, spiritual passage, and dream logic.
Selected filmmakers and genres
“Is It Magic?” includes landmark works by Dario Argento, Hayao Miyazaki, Federico Fellini, Woody Allen and Jean Cocteau, spanning horror, animation, melodrama, comedy and poetic fantasy. The films follow characters transformed by forces they cannot fully control or account for, presenting magic as a way of revealing instability within reality.
Upcoming screenings and dates
Two screenings have already taken place. The next screening is Federico Fellini’s 1965 film “Juliet of the Spirits” this Sunday at 5.30pm. After an Easter break, Woody Allen’s 1985 “The Purple Rose of Cairo” will be shown on April 26, and the final film will be Jean Cocteau’s “Orpheus,” a 1950s film, screened on May 3 in Nicosia.
