West Bloomfield, United States. A suspect in a shooting incident at Temple Israel Synagogue in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was shot dead, a law enforcement official said. No other casualties were immediately reported.

Incident response and initial reports

Michigan State Police reported an active shooting at about 12:30 p.m. local time (1730 GMT) at Temple Israel Synagogue. Few official details were immediately available, but aerial news footage showed smoke rising from the roof as police and fire department vehicles arrived at the scene.

Sheriff describes breach and confrontation

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told CNN there were no confirmed injuries “except potentially the shooter.” Bouchard told reporters the suspect drove a vehicle through the doors of the building and down a hall before being confronted by security, adding that security exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Injuries and suspect’s death

Bouchard said no children or staff were injured, and that one lead security person was hit by the car and taken to the hospital for treatment. “That individual should be okay,” he said. A law enforcement official familiar with the matter later told Reuters the suspect was shot dead at the scene.

Explosives reported in vehicle

CNN, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reported that a large amount of explosives was found in the back of the suspect’s car.
