Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus Borrowers Association (Syprodat) on Tuesday called for careful and balanced handling of the foreclosure issue as debate intensifies over possible legislative changes. It urged meaningful dialogue between the government, parliament, banks and social stakeholders.

Call for coordinated discussions

In a statement, the association said the ongoing foreclosure crisis has exposed one of the deepest social and economic vulnerabilities in Cyprus, affecting thousands of borrowers who continue to face difficulties in repaying their loans. Syprodat said coordinated discussion among relevant institutions is needed to reach sustainable solutions.

Balancing protection and stability

Syprodat said reforms should balance meaningful protection and real opportunities for restructuring loans for vulnerable borrowers with the need to maintain the country’s financial stability. It added that fair, sustainable and effective solutions are needed to protect social cohesion and strengthen confidence in the economy.

Household pressures and primary residences

The association pointed to the rising cost of living and higher loan instalments linked to interest rates, saying these factors have increased pressure on households across the country and made it harder for some borrowers to meet repayment obligations. It said that for many citizens, their primary residence is their only asset and the possibility of foreclosure creates insecurity and social concern.
