Kabul, Afghanistan. The Afghan Taliban on Tuesday expressed regret over the U.S. decision to designate Afghanistan as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention.” The group said it sought to resolve the issue through dialogue after the U.S. demanded the release of American citizens held in Afghanistan.


U.S. designation and calls for releases

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday that the Taliban government had been designated a “state sponsor of wrongful detention.” Rubio also called on Afghan authorities to free all detained U.S. citizens, including Mahmood Habibi and Dennis Coyle.
