Fountain Collapses Killing A Teenager In Ciudad Rodrigo

Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain. A 13-year-old died and two people were injured after part of a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s second soccer World Cup victory, emergency services said.

Collapse during celebrations

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the centre of Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval city of about 12,000 people in Salamanca province near the Portuguese border.

Hundreds of residents had gathered at the fountain when the upper part of the monument broke loose and struck several people, regional emergency services said.

Town hall response

Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall expressed condolences to the victim’s family and friends.

“The entire city feels this loss and accompanies the minor’s friends and family in their grief … What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy,” it said.
