Tiger Woods released on bail after DUI arrest linked to rollover crash in Florida

Tiger Woods is shown in a police booking mugshot released by the Martin County Sheriff's Office on Saturday as he was released from jail after posting bail, in Stuart, Florida

Jupiter Island, United States. Tiger Woods was released from jail late Friday after posting bail following his arrest on suspicion of DUI in connection with a rollover crash that authorities said caused no significant injuries.

Crash details and arrest

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said Woods showed signs of impairment at the crash scene. He tested negative for alcohol impairment on a breathalyzer check but refused a urinalysis test and was arrested on suspicion of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. ET in the city where Woods lives, authorities said.

Booking and release

Woods was booked at the county jail in Stuart, Florida, around 3 p.m. ET and was released on bail eight hours later, the minimum allowed under state law, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.

Sheriff’s account of the incident

In a press conference, Budensiek said Woods’ Land Rover unsuccessfully attempted to pass a truck with a pressure cleaner on its trailer. He said Woods’ vehicle hit the trailer, landed on its side, and continued down the road.

Budensiek said Woods and the truck driver were uninjured. “This could have been a lot worse,” he said.

Investigators’ observations

Budensiek said officers who responded to the scene found Woods to be impaired and added that alcohol was not believed to be involved. He said investigators believed it was “some type of medication or drug,” and that they conducted in-depth roadside tests while taking into account Woods’ injuries and surgeries.

Budensiek said Woods was cooperative but cautious in what he said. “He is cooperative, but he was trying not to incriminate himself, so he was careful in what he said and didn’t say,” he said.
