Tremithousa population growth drives new projects as delayed bridge and dumping issues persist

Paphos, Cyprus. Tremithousa has seen sharp population growth in recent years, leading to new infrastructure and cultural initiatives, community leader Christofis Petrou said on Tuesday. He added that unresolved issues include a long-delayed bridge project and uncontrolled rubbish dumping.

Population growth and local services

Petrou told the Cyprus News Agency that the community’s population has increased from about 700 residents 25 years ago to 2,000 today, following an influx of European citizens. He said the growth indicates the village is evolving and attracting new residents.

He added that the primary school, which had 16 pupils 25 years ago, now has 55, while another 40 students attend schools outside the community.

Administrative role

Tremithousa serves as the administrative centre for a cluster of communities that includes Tala, Kili, Mesogi, Mesa Chorio and Armou.

Delayed bridge project to Mesogi industrial area

The planned bridge linking Tremithousa with the Mesogi industrial area has been dubbed the “bridge of Arta” due to repeated delays. The Bridge of Arta is a historic stone bridge over the Arachthos river in Greece and is used as a symbol of a project that faces persistent delays.

According to Petrou, the bridge project was first proposed in 2003 with an estimated cost of around 250,000 Cyprus pounds, but construction never began. By 2007, the estimated cost had risen to 800,000 pounds, and in 2010 an offer of €1.1 million was put forward.
