Ayia Napa, Cyprus. Reports that Turkish Cypriot man Ahmet Tan died after an attack in Ayia Napa are false, authorities in the north said on Tuesday. The 47-year-old remains stable in the intensive care unit of Nicosia general hospital.

Medical condition

The north’s ‘health ministry’ said Tan is alive and receiving medical care, adding that his general condition remains stable.

Tan was admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in an attack in the Ayia Napa area during the early hours of July 5. He suffered a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage and has undergone two brain surgeries.

His condition had previously been described as critical. Turkish Cypriot ‘health minister’ Hakan Dincyurek said after visiting Tan that his life remained in danger.

Investigation continues

Four Swedish nationals have been arrested and remanded in custody in connection with the incident.

Police investigations into the circumstances of the attack are continuing. The four suspects are expected to appear before court again this week as proceedings continue.
