Turkish settler again enters UN “frozen area” in Avlona buffer zone for unauthorised farming

Avlona, Cyprus. A Turkish settler re-entered a designated “frozen area” within the United Nations buffer zone in Avlona on Monday and carried out unauthorised agricultural activity, according to local authorities. United Nations peacekeeping forces intervened but were unable to secure immediate compliance.

Repeat entry and agricultural work

The incident was confirmed by Avlona community leader Menelaos Savva, who said it involved the same individual removed from the area last Sunday after entering without valid permits. Savva said the settler, accompanied by another person, collected cut grass and formed hay bales using a tractor.

Savva said United Nations personnel were informed and dispatched to the scene. He said the individuals were instructed to leave but remained until they completed their work, leaving only afterwards.

UN restrictions and local requests

According to Savva, the area has been classified by the United Nations as a “frozen area,” where no cultivation or access is permitted to any party, including Greek Cypriot landowners. He said residents have long requested regulated access under supervision so they can cultivate the fields.

United Nations peacekeepers reiterated the restrictions to the individuals involved, but were unable to secure immediate compliance, according to reports.
